Isabel Joffily
Director
Isabel Joffily graduated in Social Sciences from UFRJ and, in 2015, graduated in Visual Arts from UERJ. As a director, she made the short documentary “Retrato de Carmem D.” (22', 2015), which participated in more than 15 national and international festivals, such as Visions du Réel, Janela Internacional do Cinema de Recife and É Tudo Verdade. In 2021, she completed her first feature-length documentary as a director, "Depois da Primavera" (76'), produced in partnership with Pedro Rossi. The film premiered in Brazil in the feature-length competition of the Panorama Internacional Coisa de Cinema and was screened at the Première Brasil of the Rio Festival. Its international premiere took place at the Rencontres de Toulouse festival in France. She is responsible for the production of the feature film “Sinfonia de Um Homem Comum” (86', 2022), which received the Honorable Mention and Best Editing awards at the É Tudo Verdade festival and was selected for the Hot Docs and IDFA festivals; the production and script of “Rubens Gerchman: O Rei do Mau Gosto” (70', 2022), selected for the É Tudo Verdade festival; and the production and script of “7 Cortes de Cabelo no Congo” (90', 2022), which won the awards for Best Brazilian Film at the Olhar de Cinema festival, Honorable Mention at the Rio Festival and had its international premiere at Doc Lisboa. Isabel is directing her second feature film as a director: the documentary Morro Grande, a Brazil/Germany/Netherlands co-production, with resources from RioFilme, IDFA Bertha Fund and Netherlands Film Fonds.
Isabel is a professor at PUC Rio, within the Department of Media Studies.
In 2023, Isabel was selected for the IDFAcademy.

José Joffily

Born in João Pessoa, José Joffily is a Filmmaker and holds a Master's degree in Communication from UFRJ. In parallel with his work as a director and producer, he spent twenty years as a professor at the Film Department of the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). In 2000, he was president of the Brazilian Filmmakers Association (Abraci). His work as a director includes, among other projects, the films: "Sinfonia de Um Homem Comum" (2023), "Soldado Estrangeiro" (with Pedro Rossi, 2019), "Caminho de Volta" (with Pedro Rossi, 2015), "Mão na Luva" (with Roberto Bomtempo, 2014), "Acerto de Contas" (series, 2013), "Prova de Artista" (2011), "Olhos Azuis" (2010); "A Paixão Segundo Callado" (2009), "Achados e Perdidos" (2007); "Vocação do Poder" (with Eduardo Escorel, 2005), "Dois Perdidos Numa Noite Suja" (2002); "O Chamado de Deus" (2000); and "Quem Matou Pixote?" (1996). In 2022/2023, his documentary "Sinfonia de Um Homem Comum" was screened at the É Tudo Verdade festival (Honorable Mention and Best Editing), Hot Docs, and IDFA, among others.
In 2024, José Joffily was invited to be a voter for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood – the institution responsible for the Oscar ceremony.

Pedro Rossi

Pedro Rossi is a director, screenwriter, and cinematographer based in Rio de Janeiro. In 2022, he released the feature documentary Rubens Gerchman: The King of Bad Taste, for which he served as director, writer, and editor. The film was selected for the national competition at the It’s All True International Documentary Film Festival and the ARCA International Film Festival at the Atchugarry Museum of Contemporary Art in Maldonado, Uruguay. It was also screened at ArtRio and institutions such as the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art and the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Modern Art.
He wrote and shot the documentary Symphony of a Common Man (José Joffily, 86’, 2022), which was selected for It’s All True! (winning a Special Jury Mention and Best Editing), Hot Docs, and IDFA. 7 Haircuts in Congo (90’, 2022) is his most recent release as director, cinematographer, and editor. Co-directed with Luciana Bezerra and Gustavo Melo, the film premiered in June 2022 at the Olhar de Cinema festival, where it received the award for Best Brazilian Film. Its international premiere took place at DocLisboa in October 2022, and its Rio de Janeiro debut occurred at the Premiere Brasil section of the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival, where it received a Special Jury Mention.
Alongside José Joffily, he co-directed and shot the documentary The Way Back (75', 2015), which premiered at It’s All True in 2015, and Foreign Soldier (86', 2019), which was part of the main selection at It’s All True! and DocsMX. He also directed and shot the documentary series Sound and Silence (13 episodes, 2018) for Arte 1 channel, and the feature documentary After the Spring (84', 2021), co-directed with Isabel Joffily. The film premiered in Brazil in the feature competition at Panorama Internacional Coisa de Cinema and was screened at the 2021 Premiere Brasil of the Rio Film Festival. Its international premiere took place at the 2021 Rencontres de Toulouse festival in France.
